Protect Your Energy Like It’s Your Income

You worked hard for your money. You think about how you earn it, how you spend it, how you invest it. But when's the last time you gave that same level of care to your energy? If you've ever looked at your calendar and felt your stomach drop, this one is for you.

Your Energy Is a Currency

Here's the reframe that changed everything for me: your energy operates exactly like money. When it's high, you feel free. When it's low, everything suffers. And just like with your finances, you can't keep spending what you don't have without eventually hitting a wall.

The problem is that most of us treat our energy like it's unlimited. We stack our calendars, say yes to everything, and keep pushing because the goals are real and the drive is there. But drive without boundaries doesn't build a life — it depletes one.

What Burnout Actually Costs You

I want to be honest about a week I had back in February. My daughter had a cheer clinic on Saturday and a competition on Sunday. My boyfriend was traveling for work. I was still in my team leader role, managing people and partnerships. And I had just launched the first episode of this podcast.

I told myself I could handle it. And then Sunday night, I sent this text to my "Pump Queens" mom workout group:

"I think my burnout is catching up with me, I've had a headache off and on since I've been home and I may cancel my day tomorrow so I can sleep in. I'll text all in the morning to let you know if I'm gonna make it to class."

What I thought would be one day of rest turned into nearly a full week where I couldn't function. And the part that hurt most wasn't even the exhaustion. I realized that I had done it to myself. Everything on that calendar — I put it there. The options to delegate, reschedule, or skip were always available to me. I just convinced myself they weren't. I had options, and I made choices that created the situation I was in.

That unplanned week of rest put me further behind than if I had simply built rest into the week from the start. I lost more time by refusing to slow down than I would have by choosing to.

Knowing Is Not the Same As Doing

This is the part I had to sit with. I know how to protect my energy. I coach people on this. I talk about intentional living on this podcast. And I still ran myself into the ground.

Knowing better is not the same as doing better. That gap between knowledge and action is where burnout lives. So the real question is not whether you understand the importance of rest — it's whether you are actually making choices that reflect that understanding.

Your calendar does not lie. If what you have planned requires more energy than you actually have, that is information. Use it.

How to Start Protecting Your Energy Today

Here are the four things I want you to walk away with:

One — your calendar is your source of truth. If your plans are outpacing your capacity, adjust before your body forces you to.

Two — not saying no is still a choice. And it's one you'll pay for later.

Three — your body will always take the rest your mind refuses to plan.

Four — protecting your energy is not selfish. It is literally how you stay consistent. And consistency is what builds everything.

Right now, go pull up your calendar. Do you have any white space? Any unaccounted time that belongs just to you? If not, find one thing you can delegate, reschedule, or remove. Just one. Start there.

Reflection: Where are you currently spending energy you don't have, and what's one thing you could delegate, skip, or reschedule this week to protect it?

If this hit home, share it with a friend who needs to hear it. And listen to the full episode of Bold Clarity wherever you get your podcasts. Find us on Instagram and keep the conversation going.
